TMS are delighted to advise that our work to construct a new Larinier fish pass and eel pass at Buckfast Abbey has been shortlisted for the ICE South West Engineering Awards 2022.

Previous work to repair Buckfast Abbey’s weir across the River Dart highlighted that the existing fish and eel passes were substandard, meaning that very few salmon, trout and eels were able to navigate the weir and reach their spawning grounds.

Buckfast Abbey Weir was the last remaining significant barrier on the River Dart without a modern day fish pass. Due to the historic nature of Buckfast Abbey, the project team comprising of the Abbey themselves, the Environment Agency, TMS and Fishtek Consulting worked hard to develop a solution that would fully meet the needs of the fish, but would also be visually attractive.

All phases of the project were delivered with local tradesmen, materials and companies, thereby benefitting the local economy and also reducing carbon emissions. To read more about the project please visit https://www.ice.org.uk/sw/awards
